The Iris Murdoch Review
Edition 16, 2025
This special issue of the Iris Murdoch Review celebrates the flourishing work of North American and North American-related Iris Murdoch scholars and admirers. As J. Robert Baker’s account of the American beginnings and development of the Iris Murdoch Society itself makes clear, this keen engagement has been going on for decades. All Murdochians owe a debt of gratitude to the Society’s enterprising founder, the late Barbara Stevens Heusel. Her original invitation and challenge, ‘Won’t you join our society?’, which Baker takes as his title, is one we still enthusiastically issue today.

Tales from the Cloister: Godden, Murdoch and Spark
23 September 2026The retreat from the secular world to a religious order was certainly not unusual prior to the Second World War, particularly for artists, but for these three novelists the impact that Stanbrook in particular had on both their writing and personal lives, however fleeting that initial visit, was decisive. Welcome to the Iris Murdoch Society Website. The society exists to champion the work, and celebrate the life, of the novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch: one of the most important writers and thinkers of the Twentieth Century.
Murdoch's work spans fiction (26 novels), philosophy, plays, poetry and thousands of letters. All of her work is still in print, and you can find recent books about her life and work in our online shop.
The Society is for all readers and enthusiasts with hundreds of members from accross the world. We organise regular events in the UK, and promote events worldwide. We organise a bienniel international conference alongside a bienniel Summer School.

Influences and Inspirations: Iris Murdoch, Janet Frame and Susan Howatch
15 July 2026To the long list of writers known to be influenced by Murdoch, I want to add the names of Janet Frame and Susan Howatch. Janet Frame (1924– 2004) is a great writer from Dunedin, New Zealand; Susan Howatch (1940) is a famous British bestselling author.
Out of the Attic
16 March 2026As someone who lives for both poetry and Iris Murdoch (her own canon and the wonderful world of scholarship that surrounds her), Poems from an Attic, is the best fiftieth birthday present I could wish for. I’ve interrupted my project of reading fifty books published in 1975 (my own vintage) to splash around in the joy of this lyrical cornucopia.
