Iris Murdoch and Dame Julian of Norwich

Saturday 18th February 2023, 5.15–6.30 p.m., in Cloisters, Bishop Otter Campus.
Free and open to all.

In this lecture Professor Anne Rowe (University of Chichester) will explore the literary and theological links between the novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch and the medieval mystic Julian of Norwich. Julian is frequently referenced in Murdoch’s late philosophy and her work ‘The Revelations of Divine Love’ had a profound impact on the development of her fiction.

Professor Anne Rowe is recognised as one of the foremost experts on Murdoch’s fiction, her most recent work being Iris Murdoch in the ‘Writers and their Work’ series from Liverpool University Press (2019). She has authored or edited numerous books on Murdoch, including editing Murdoch’s correspondence, Living on Paper: Letters from Iris Murdoch (2015). She is currently Visiting Professor at the University of Chichester, Emeritus Reader at the University of Kingston, and working on an edition of Murdoch’s poetry.
